1. Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem.
   He summoned the elders, leaders, judges and officials of Israel,
   and they presented themselves before God.
2. Joshua said to all the people,
   "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:
   'Long ago your forefathers, including Terah the father of Abraham
   and Nahor, lived beyond the River and worshiped other gods.
3. But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the River
   and led him throughout Canaan and gave him many descendants.
   I gave him Isaac,


아브라함이 아직 하나님을 알지 못했을 때에
그의 아버지 데라가 아직 다른 신을 섬기고 있을 때에
하나님께서 그를 불러 내셨고 인도하여 가나안에 이르게 하셨다고 말한다.

하나님의 말씀이 온 땅에서 순종되지 않을 때에
하나님께서 부득이 한 사람 아브라함을 택하신 것이다.
그가 어떠함이 아니라 하나님의 긍휼하심 때문에.....


4. and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau.
   I assigned the hill country of Seir to Esau,
   but Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt.
5. "'Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I afflicted the Egyptians
   by what I did there, and I brought you out.
6. When I brought your fathers out of Egypt, you came to the sea,
   and the Egyptians pursued them with chariots and horsemen as far as the Red Sea.
7. But they cried to the LORD for help, and he put darkness between
   you and the Egyptians; he brought the sea over them and covered them.
   You saw with your own eyes what I did to the Egyptians.
   Then you lived in the desert for a long time.


아브라함에게 이삭을 그리고 이삭에게 에서와 야곱을 주신 하나님이
야곱의 후손을 애굽으로 내려가게 하셨다가
그곳에서 큰 민족을 이루게 하신후에
다시 모세와 아론을 선택하시고 그들로 통하여 이스라엘을 구원하시기로 하신다.
애굽의 압제 가운데 거하는 이스라엘을 부르셔서
그들을 광야로 인도하여 내셨고 그 길을 막는 애굽사람들을
친히 하나님께서 막으시고 물리쳐 주셨다는 것을 기억하라고 한다.

이 사건을 이스라엘이 기억하는 것이
그들의 하나님이 백성되었다는 것을 기억하는 것이고
이 땅 가나안에서 하나님의 백성으로 살아가는 자세를 알게하는 것이기 때문이다.


8. "'I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived east of the Jordan.
   They fought against you, but I gave them into your hands.
   I destroyed them from before you, and you took possession of their land.
9. When Balak son of Zippor, the king of Moab, prepared to fight
   against Israel, he sent for Balaam son of Beor to put a curse on you.
10. But I would not listen to Balaam, so he blessed you again and again,
   and I delivered you out of his hand.
11. "'Then you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho.
   The citizens of Jericho fought against you, as did also the Amorites,
   Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites,
   but I gave them into your hands.
12. I sent the hornet ahead of you, which drove them out before you
   --also the two Amorite kings.
   You did not do it with your own sword and bow.
13. So I gave you a land on which you did not toil
   and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat
   from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.'


가나안을 정복해 들어오는 이스라엘과 하나님은 동행하셨고
그들을 요단강을 건너도록 여리고를 물리치도록
그리고 온 가나안 땅을 정복하도록 도우셨다.
아니 그들 앞에서 그들을 물리치셨음으로 이스라엘은 그 정복에
자신들의 칼과 활을 사용하지 아니하고도 승리할 수 있었다.

하나님은 그들에게 힘쓰지 않고 땅을 얻으며 건축하지 않고 성을 얻고
경작하지 않은 포도원과 과실을 먹게하셨다고 말씀하신다.
즉 그들이 거하는 땅은 하나님이 주신 것이지 자기들이 얻은 것이 아니라는 것이다.
그러므로 그들은 이 땅을 주신 이를 기억해야만 한다.
이것이 하나님의 백성됨의 조건이고 그들이 계속해서 거하는 조건인 것이다.
그들은 가나안을 들어오면서 에발산과 그리심산 앞에서
그 언약을 다시 읽고 맹세함으로 하나님의 백성으로 세워졌다.
그러한 그들의 언약과 맹세는 이 땅에 사는한 계속되어야 하는 것이다.


14. "Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness.
   Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River
   and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.
15. But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you,
   then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve,
   whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River,
   or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living.
   But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."
16. Then the people answered,
   "Far be it from us to forsake the LORD to serve other gods!
17. It was the LORD our God himself who brought us and our fathers
   up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, and performed those great
   signs before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and
   among all the nations through which we traveled.
18. And the LORD drove out before us all the nations,
   including the Amorites, who lived in the land.
   We too will serve the LORD, because he is our God."



여호수아의 선언과 백성들의 대답

여호수아는 백성들 앞에서 하나님의 인도와 동행을 설명한 후에
그들에게 결단을 촉구한다.
하나님을 섬길 것이든지 다른 신을 섬길 것이든지
둘 중에 하나를 너희는 선택할 것이다. 그러나 나는 하나님을 섬길 것이다.
이것은 지금 당장의 삶에서만의 선택이 아니라
앞으로의 모든 삶의 여정 가운데 그들의 선택을 붇는 것이고
그들은 그 선택을 스스로 해야하는 것이다.

우리의 인생 가운데 당장은 이 질문에 대답하기 쉬운지 모른다.
그러나 이스라엘 처럼 시간이 흐르면서 그들의 삶에 문제가 생길때에
그들은 자주 너무 쉽게 하나님을 떠나 다른 신을 섬겼던 것 처럼
우리의 삶에서도 다른상황 다른 환경에 거하게 되면
또 너무 쉽게 하나님의 말슴을 떠나는 것은 아닌지 돌아볼 것이다.

하나님의 백성으로 그 자녀로 살아간다는 것은
나의 삶의 모든 순간에 그러해야 한다는 것이다.
나의 결단의 순간에만이 아니라 평안의 순간 기쁨의 순간
쾌락을 맛보고자하는 유혹의 순간과 절체절명의 위기의 순간에도
우리는 여전히 하나님의 자녀여야 하고 그 말슴에 순종하는 사람이어야 한다.

백성들은 너무도 단호하게 대답한다.
우리 역시 그러하리라. 그러나 그 결과는 우리가 아는바와 같이 실패가 아니던가
우리의 결과는 그러하지 않기를 원한다.
우리가 이들보다 잘나서가 아니라 연약하기 때문에
더 많이 하나님을 의지한다면 우리는 하나님의 사람으로 살 수 있을 것이다.

우리의 기억이 나의 죄인되었음에도 불구하고
나를 당신의 자녀 삼으시고 구원해 주셨다는 것을 기억하는 동안에는
적어도 그 하나님의 기뻐하시는 것을 하면 살아갈 것이 아닌가


19. Joshua said to the people,
   "You are not able to serve the LORD. He is a holy God;
   he is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins.
20. If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods,
   he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you,
   after he has been good to you."
21. But the people said to Joshua, "No! We will serve the LORD."
22. Then Joshua said,
   "You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve the LORD."
   "Yes, we are witnesses," they replied.
23. "Now then," said Joshua, "throw away the foreign gods that
   are among you and yield your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel."
24. And the people said to Joshua,
   "We will serve the LORD our God and obey him."
25. On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people,
   and there at Shechem he drew up for them decrees and laws.
26. And Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God.
   Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak
   near the holy place of the LORD.
27. "See!" he said to all the people.
   "This stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words
   the LORD has said to us. It will be a witness against you
   if you are untrue to your God."
28. Then Joshua sent the people away, each to his own inheritance.


백성들에게 다시 결단하게 하고 언약비를 세우는 여호수아
여호수아는 백성들을 결단하게 하고 그들의 삶에서 이방신을 제할 것을 명한다.
그리고 그 증거의 돌을 여호와의 성소옆에 세운다.
그들의 언약은 하나님의 율법책에 기록하였다고 성경은 말한다.

이중으로 삼중으로 여호수아는 백성들을 경계하고
언약하게 하고 결단하게 한다. 이것이 여호수아의 마지막 할 일이었던 것이다.
그는 스스로의 삶 가운데 하나님의 말씀을 순종하는 삶을 살 것이었지만
그의 사후에 이스라엘이 어떻게 할지에 대해서는 이 이상 할 수 없었던 것이다.

이스라엘을 향한 그의 애정이며 하나님을 향한 그의 열심잉다.
적어도 여호수아는 자기의 생전에와 이 언약을 기억하는 백성들에게는
하나님의 말씀에 순종하는 삶을 살도록 하고 싶었던 것이고
그 온 마음으로 하나님만 섬기는 백성이고자 했던 것이다.

우리의 삶에도 여호수아와 같은 열심이 있기를 원한다.
나의 모든 삶의 순간에 하나님만 섬기고자 하는 결단과
이를 나뿐 아니라 나의 사랑하는 이들에게도 지키게 하고자 하는 열심
그들의 생명을 위해서 그들을 결단하게 까지 하는 열심이....


29. After these things, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD,
   died at the age of a hundred and ten.
30. And they buried him in the land of his inheritance,
   at Timnath Serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.
31. Israel served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua
   and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced
   everything the LORD had done for Israel.
32. And Joseph's bones, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt,
   were buried at Shechem in the tract of land that Jacob bought
   for a hundred pieces of silver from the sons of Hamor,
   the father of Shechem.
   This became the inheritance of Joseph's descendants.
33. And Eleazar son of Aaron died and was buried at Gibeah,
   which had been allotted to his son Phinehas in the hill country of Ephraim.


여호수아와 엘르아살, 그리고 장로들의 죽음

적어도 그들이 살아 있을 동안에는 이스라엘은 하나님의 백성이었다.
그들이 살아 있는 동안에는 하나님을 섬기고 이방신을 섬기지 아니하였다.
그러나 그들이 죽고 나면서 그들의 후손들은 하나님을 떠나기 시작했다.

인간의 연약과 사악함은 바로 이렇게 드러난다.
나의 생애 가운데 하나님의 이적을 체험하고도
하나님을 더날 수 있으며 나아가 그 체험을 경험하지 못한 후손들은
더 쉽게 하나님의 곁을 떠날 수 있있다는 것이다.

하나님을 섬기는 것이
마치 증거를 찾아 그 증거를 믿는 사람들 처럼 변해가고 있다.
내가 납득할 만한 증거나 체험이 있으면 그 때는 하나님을 맏을 수 있지만
그 기억이 히미해지고 그 경험이 히미해지면
또 우리는 너무도 쉽게 하나님을 떠난다는 것이다.

하나님은 언제나 살아계시고
우리의 삶을 주관하시는 분이라고 고백하지만
지금 현재 나에게 역사하시고 증거해 주시지 않으면
우리는 쉽게 의심하고 유혹에 넘어가는 사람들인 것이다.

그러나 그럴수 없다.
하나님은 언제나 살아계신 분이시고
우리와 관계없이 온 세상을 주관하시는 분이시면
이미 우리에게는 구원의 놀라운 은혜를 주심으로 당신의 사랑을 확증하셨다.
더 이상 그분의 존재와 사랑의 증거를 필요로 하지 않는다....
