다윗과 골리앗의 싸움

하나님의 사람/왕으로 기름부음을 받은 다윗이 여전히 드러나지 않을 때에
블레셋과의 전쟁이 일어나고 다윗의 신실함과 용맹이 공개적으로
또 하나님 앞에서와 모든 백성들 그리고 블레셋 앞에서 드러난다.


이스라엘의 왕은 사울이지만
이 전쟁을 통해서 진정한 왕의 덕목을 이야기하고 있다.



1. Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war
   and assembled at Socoh in Judah. They pitched camp
   at Ephes Dammim, between Socoh and Azekah.
2. Saul and the Israelites assembled and camped in the Valley
   of Elah and drew up their battle line to meet the Philistines.
3. The Philistines occupied one hill and the Israelites another,
   with the valley between them.
4. A champion named Goliath, who was from Gath,
   came out of the Philistine camp. He was over nine feet tall.
5. He had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat
   of scale armor of bronze weighing five thousand shekels;
6. on his legs he wore bronze greaves, and a bronze javelin
   was slung on his back.
7. His spear shaft was like a weaver's rod, and its iron point
   weighed six hundred shekels. His shield bearer went ahead of him.
8. Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel,
   "Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine,
   and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man
   and have him come down to me.
9. If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects;
   but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects
   and serve us."
10. Then the Philistine said, "This day I defy the ranks of Israel!
   Give me a man and let us fight each other."
11. On hearing the Philistine's words, Saul
   and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified.


새로운 전쟁이 일어났다.
늘 이스라엘의 적으로 괴롭히는 블레셋이 이번에도 전쟁을 일으켰다.
그들과 이스라엘은 계곡을 마주하고 양편에 진을 치고 섰다.
고대의 전쟁중에 전국이 전면전을 하기 전에
먼저 양쪽 장수가 나와서 겨루고 이를 통해서 전쟁을 시작하는 것을
볼 수 있다. 때로는 이것으로 전쟁의 승패가 갈리기도 한고 말이다.


블레셋진영에 거대한 장수가 나타났는데 그가 골리앗이다.
가드사람으로 아낙자손이었던 골리앗은 거인이었다.
대대로 아낙자손은 거인이었고 전쟁에 능한 사람들이었다.
가나안 정복때에도 이 아낙자손이 있는 헤브론의 강함을 확인하지 않았는가?
그가 나타나서 싸움을 돋구는데 이에 대항할 이스라엘 장수가 없었다.


사울도 대단한 장수였음에 틀림이 없었고 그의 수하에도
훌륭한고 용맹한 장수들이 많이 있었지만 골리앗의 위용에
그 어느누구도 나가서 싸울만한 사람이 없었던 것이다.

전쟁이라는 큰 그림 안에서
골리앗과 대치 하는 이스라엘의 상황은
그들이 어떻게 하나님의 백성으로 싸울 수 있는지를 보여주는 그림이리라.
그들의 구원은 결코 그들에게 있지 않음을 알고 자기들의 대적이 어떠함에도 불구하고
하나님을 의지하여 그 중간에서 용사로 나서야 할 사람이 필요하다.
어쩌면 그것이 바로 이스라엘의 왕이 해야 할 역할이고 요구일 것이다.
그러나 사울은 이 상황에서 다른 이스라엘 백성과 같이 숨어 있을 뿐이다.


12. Now David was the son of an Ephrathite named Jesse,
   who was from Bethlehem in Judah. Jesse had eight sons,
   and in Saul's time he was old and well advanced in years.
13. Jesse's three oldest sons had followed Saul to the war:
   The firstborn was Eliab; the second, Abinadab;
   and the third, Shammah.
14. David was the youngest. The three oldest followed Saul,
15. but David went back and forth from Saul to tend
   his father's sheep at Bethlehem.
16. For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning
   and evening and took his stand.
17. Now Jesse said to his son David,
   "Take this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread
   for your brothers and hurry to their camp.
18. Take along these ten cheeses to the commander of their unit.
   See how your brothers are and bring back some assurance from them.
19. They are with Saul and all the men of Israel in the Valley of Elah,
   fighting against the Philistines."


다윗의 현재 위치는 아직 전쟁에도 참가하지 않는 나이이며
그의 형들이 전쟁에 나간 사이 양떼를 치는 일을 맡아하고 있는 중이다.
이미 사울을위해 수금을 타고 병기를 드는 자로 세워졌음에도 불구하고
여전히 그는 사울에게와 집을 왕복하면서 일하고 있었다.
이는 그의 나이가 아직 너무 어렸기 때문일 것이고 그만큼 다윗의 위치가
다른 사람들이 볼때에 연약했음을 의하는 것이리라.


아버지 이새는 다윗을 불러 그의 형들이 있는 전장에 심부름을 보낸다.
그들에게 먹을 것을 가져다 주고 안전을 확인하라는 것이다.
그저 다윗은 전쟁터 형들에게 음식을 전달하고 오는 역할 이외에 할 것이 없었다.
한번도 전쟁에 나가본 적도 없었고 또 그럴 수도 없었을 것이다.


반면 블레셋의 골리앗은 40일을 아침 저녁으로 나와서 이스라엘을 도발한다.
그럼에도 불구하고 어느누구하나 그에 대항하지 못하는 것이
바로 지금 이스라엘의 형편인 것이다.
이전에 전쟁에서 크게 승리하였지만 그럼에도 불구하고 여전히
블레셋은 강성하였고 이스라엘은 연약하였다.
블레셋은 철을 다루어 무기를 만들고 다듬는 기술이 발달해 있었지만
이스라엘에는 여전히 대장장이가 없었고 무기를 가진 이도 별로 없었다.
인간의 눈으로 보이는 상황은 결코 싸울만 하지 않으며 불확실할 뿐이다.
이전의 전쟁에서 요나단을 통해 승전했던 것은 기억일 뿐이다.
지금 그들에게 있는 것은 현실이고 눈 앞에 보이는 골리앗 뿐인 것이다.


우리도 하나님의 말씀을 듣고 읽으면서
그 말씀이 주는 확신과 은혜를 경험한다.
그리고 하나님의 사람으로 살아가는 용기와 비젼을 발견한다.
그러나 현실이 골리앗과 같이 우리를 엄습해오면
우리가 바라보는 것은 하나님의 말씀이 주시는 용기와 힘이 아니라
눈 앞에 펼쳐지는 골리앗과 같은 현실이고 그 절망과 힘겨움 뿐 아니던가
나에게 말슴은 이미 선경 속에나 있는 진리가 되거나
나의 경험한 놀라운 은혜는 이미 기억에나 존재하는 것이 되지는 않는가?


하나님은 다윗의 때에 살아 계신 것 처럼
지금도 살아계시고 현실에 역사하신다.
그 말씀대로 살아가는 것은 그때나 지금이 동일하며
그 안에 승리의 열쇠가 있음은 부정할 수 없는 진리인 것이다.
다만 내가 그 진리를 나의 것으로 인식하는가가 분제인 것이다.
그것도 암담하고 앞이 보이지 않는 현실에 맞서서 .....


20. Early in the morning David left the flock with a shepherd,
   loaded up and set out, as Jesse had directed.
   He reached the camp as the army was going out
   to its battle positions, shouting the war cry.
21. Israel and the Philistines were drawing up
   their lines facing each other.
22. David left his things with the keeper of supplies,
   ran to the battle lines and greeted his brothers.
23. As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion
   from Gath, stepped out from his lines and shouted
   his usual defiance, and David heard it.
24. When the Israelites saw the man, they all ran from him in great fear.
25. Now the Israelites had been saying,
   "Do you see how this man keeps coming out?
   He comes out to defy Israel. The king will give great wealth
   to the man who kills him. He will also give him his daughter
   in marriage and will exempt his father's family from taxes in Israel."
26. David asked the men standing near him,
   "What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine
   and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised
   Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?"
27. They repeated to him what they had been saying and told him,
   "This is what will be done for the man who kills him."
28. When Eliab, David's oldest brother, heard him speaking
   with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked,
   "Why have you come down here? And with whom did you
   leave those few sheep in the desert? I know how conceited you
   are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only
   to watch the battle."
29. "Now what have I done?" said David. "Can't I even speak?"
30. He then turned away to someone else and brought up
   the same matter, and the men answered him as before.


전장에 도착한 다윗은 골리앗의 목소리를 듣는다.
그리고 이 일을 두고 이야기하는 백성들의 이야기도 함께 듣는다.
사울은 골리앗을 물리치는 사람에게 여차여차한 상을 준비하고
누구든지 골리앗과 대항해서 싸워주기를 기다리고 잇었다.
그러나 아무도 이에 응하지 않았을 뿐 아니라
두려움 속에서 전장에서의 시간들을 보내고 있을 따름이었다.


다윗은 골리앗의 모욕적인 도발을 듣자 그 속에 분이 일어났다.
하나님의 백성인 이스라엘을 모욕하는 할례없는 백성이라는 표현은
이전에 요나단에게 들은바 있는 고백이 아니던가
적어도 하나님과의 언약의 증표인 할례를 기억하고
그 언약위에서 하나님의 백성됨을 인지하고 있는 다윗에게
눈 앞에보이는 골리앗의 모습은 단순히 할례없는 백성일 뿐이었다.


형 엘리압의 핀잔에도 불구하고 다윗의 마음은 이미 골리앗과 싸워야 겠다는
결심에서 움직이지 않았다. 그는 거룩한 분노를 참지 못하고 잇는 것이다.
마치 광야에서 비느하스가 거룩한 분노를 가지고 죄를 제거한 것 처럼
다윗도 하나님을 모욕하는 골리앗을 대하여 거룩한 분노가 일어난 것이다.


하나님의 사람으로 우리속에 이러한 분노가 있는지
하나님의 이름을 위하여 우리가 이렇게 질투하며 살고 있는지
하나님의 이름이 모욕받는 상황을 인해서 분노하고 질투하는지 고민할 일이다,
오히려 나로 인해서 우리 교회로 인해서 하나님의 이름이 부그러움을 당하고
세상 가운데 조롱거리가 된다면 우리는 하나님의 백성이 아닐 것이다.
하나님의 말씀을 가지고 그 안에 살아가는 우리들이 하나님의 이름에 대하여
그 말씀과 언약에 대하여 신실한 열심과 확신이 있어야만 한다.


31. What David said was overheard and reported to Saul,
   and Saul sent for him.
32. David said to Saul, "Let no one lose heart on account
   of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him."
33. Saul replied, "You are not able to go out against this Philistine
   and fight him; you are only a boy, and he has been
   a fighting man from his youth."
34. But David said to Saul, "Your servant has been keeping
   his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off
   a sheep from the flock,
35. I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth.
   When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it.
36. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear;
   this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them,
   because he has defied the armies of the living God.
37. The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the
   paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine."
   Saul said to David, "Go, and the LORD be with you."
38. Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic.
   He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head.
39. David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried
   walking around, because he was not used to them.
   "I cannot go in these," he said to Saul,
   "because I am not used to them." So he took them off.
40. Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones
   from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd's bag and,
   with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.


다윗은 사울에게 자기가 나가 싸울것을 말한다.
사울은 다윗이 아직 너무 어리므로 싸우지 못할 것임을
그러나 다윗은 자신의 용맹을 말하고 설득하여 싸울것임을 말한다.


사울의 갑옷이 다윗에게는 익숙하지 아니하고
그의 병기도 다윗에게 적절하지 아니함으로 그는 이것을 의지하지 않기로 한다.
그리고 그의 고백에서 분명히 표현하듯이
그는 곰과 사자의 손에서 구원하신 하나님께서
이 할례없는 백성의 손에서 자신을 구원하실 것임을 믿었다.


어차피 갑옷을 입고 칼을 찬다하여도 외형상 싸움의 승패가 바꾸지느 않는다.
다윗이 의지하는 것은 그의 다른 어떤 것이 아니라 오직 그가 신뢰하는
하나님의 능력이고 도우심이므로 다윗은 그것에 집중한다.
그리고 그에게 가장 익숙한 물맷돌과 물매를 들고 나아간다.


우리가 이 당에서 살아가면서 때로는 이와 같은 상황에서
온전히 하나님을 신뢰하고 그분만 의지하고 나아갈 수 있는가?
또 하나님만 온전히 신뢰하는 것이 나의 준비를 하지 않으면서
기도만하는 것으로 오해되고 있지는 않은가?
다윗은 하나님의 도우심을 확신하고 신뢰하였을 뿐 아니라
자기가 싸움에 나아가 가장 믿을 수 있는 것들을 준비하였다.
다만 그것이 다른이들의 눈에 적절한 것 같아 보이지 않아도 말이다.
그렇다 우리는 이 땅에서 온전히 하나님을 의지할 뿐 아니라
내가 준비할 수 있는 최선을 준비하는 것이 필요하다.
다른 이들의 시각이나 눈에 적절하고 필요한 것이 아니라
하나님의 능력을 의지함으로 내가 할 수 있는 최선
그 안에서 나의 능력을 최대한 발휘할 수 있는 준비를 말이다.
그것이 때로는 기도일 수도 있고
또 때로는 공부이거나 건강일 수도 있을 것이다.
나아가서 또 다른 어떤 것들일 수도 있을 것이다....


41. Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer in front of him,
   kept coming closer to David.
42. He looked David over and saw that he was only a boy,
   ruddy and handsome, and he despised him.
43. He said to David,
   "Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?"
   And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
44. "Come here," he said, "and I'll give your flesh
   to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!"


골리앗의 반응은 그야말로 가관이라는 표현이다.
40일을 기다려 꼼짝않던 이스라엘에서 소년하나가 그것도 무기없이
아무런 갑옷도 없이 싸우러 나왔으니 그럴만도 하였을 것이다.
어쩌면 이것이 이 세상속에서 우리의 모습일지 모른다.
오만하고 의기양양한 거대한 골리앗 처럼 세상은 우리에게 도전한다.
그 앞에 우리가 섰을 때 우리는 작은 소년이요 무기도 없는 상태인지도 모른다.
그러나 분명한 것은 그 안에 동행하시는 하나님의 주권이다.


45. David said to the Philistine,
   "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin,
   but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty,
   the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
46. This day the LORD will hand you over to me,
   and I'll strike you down and cut off your head.
   Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds
   of the air and the beasts of the earth, and the whole world
   will know that there is a God in Israel.
47. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword
   or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD'S,
   and he will give all of you into our hands."


다윗의 고백은 그의 마음의 표현이다.
그에게서 중심을 보신 하나님의 원하시는 마음이기도 한 것이다.
눈에보이는 다른 것을 의지하지 아니하고 오직 하나님만 의지하는 마음
창과 칼이 아니라 하나님의 도우심을 의지하는 것을 보신다.


이 세상의 주권자가 하나님이심을 믿으며
그 고백위에 살아가는 우리의 삶을 하나님은 원하신다.
전쟁을 이기게 하시는 분도 하나님이시고
이 세상 가운데 역사하시는 분도 하나님이신 것이다.
어느것도 하나님의 손길 아래서 피할 수 없고 벗어날 수 없다.
그리고 하나님의 영광을 위해서 살아가는 이들을 하나님은 도우신다.
그 이름이 모욕을 받거나 하나님의 영광이 가리우는 것에 분노하는 이들을
하나님은 기뻐하시고 그들의 보호자가 되어주신다.


정말 나는 이 땅을 살아가면서
칼과 창이 아니라 하나님만을 의지하며 살아가는가?
아니 앞으로라도 살아갈 수 있다고 고백하는가?
목사로 이 땅을 살아감에도 불구하고 하나님의 능력만 온전히 의지하겠노라고
그 하나님의 도우심만을 바라보면서 사람이나 물질이나 환경을 의지하지
않고 살아 가겠노라고 다짐하며 살아가는가?

마음의 원과 삶의 부족이 조화하여
부끄럽지 않기를 기도한다.
너무 자신만만하여 넘어지지 않기를
하나님의 도우심을 겸손히 구하고 나의 부족을 인정할 수 있기를 기도한다.
하나님은 마음이 겸손한 사람을 찾으신다. 진정으로 겸손한 마음을....


48. As the Philistine moved closer to attack him,
   David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him.
49. Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone,
   he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead.
   The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.
50. So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone;
   without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine
   and killed him.
51. David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine's
   sword and drew it from the scabbard. After he killed him,
   he cut off his head with the sword. When the Philistines saw
   that their hero was dead, they turned and ran.
52. Then the men of Israel and Judah surged forward with a shout
   and pursued the Philistines to the entrance of Gath and
   to the gates of Ekron. Their dead were strewn along
   the Shaaraim road to Gath and Ekron.
53. When the Israelites returned from chasing the Philistines,
   they plundered their camp.
54. David took the Philistine's head and brought it to Jerusalem,
   and he put the Philistine's weapons in his own tent.
55. As Saul watched David going out to meet the Philistine,
   he said to Abner, commander of the army,
   "Abner, whose son is that young man?"
   Abner replied, "As surely as you live, O king, I don't know."
56. The king said, "Find out whose son this young man is."
57. As soon as David returned from killing the Philistine,
   Abner took him and brought him before Saul,
   with David still holding the Philistine's head.
58. "Whose son are you, young man?" Saul asked him.
   David said, "I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem."


다윗의 승리는 우리에게 너무도 당연하다.
그러나 당신의 사람들에게나 독자들에게는 생경할 것이다.
어떤 영웅담의 과장 처럼 다윗의 싸움은 우리에게 인식된다.


그러나 기억할 것은 이것이 하나님의 방법이라는 것이다.
하나님은 단순히 한 사람의 믿음의 고백을 인해서 민족을 구원하시는 분이시다.
이전에 요나단을 통해서 그러했고
여호수아와 많은 사사들을 통해서 그렇게 하셨다.
당신을 온전히 따르는 한사람이 하나님의 도우심을 얻게되는 필요충분요소이다.

이 땅에서 하나님을 온전히 따르고 신실히 섬기는 한사람을
하나님은 오늘도 찾으신다. 당신의 사람으로 세우시고
그를 통하여 이 땅에서 당신의 이름을 찬양케할 사람을 말이다.


나의 삶이 다윗과 같기를 바라는 것은 얼마나 욕심인지
그러나 나의 마음이 그의 마음과 같을 수 있기를 기도한다.
한사람을 찾으실 때 우리가 그 마음에 합할 수 있기를 기도한다.
그로 인해서 당신의 일을 이 땅에서 이루며 살 수 있기를 말이다.


이 일을 통해 왕위를 향해 나아가는 다윗의 발걸음은 시작되지만
그의 믿음의 행위는 사람을 향한 것이 아니라 하나님을 향한 고백이었다.
