1. After Ahab's death, Moab rebelled against Israel.
2. Now Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and injured himself.
   So he sent messengers, saying to them,
   "Go and consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, to see if I will recover from this injury."
3. But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite,
   "Go up and meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and ask them,
   'Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going off to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?'
4. Therefore this is what the LORD says:
   'You will not leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!'" So Elijah went.
5. When the messengers returned to the king, he asked them, "Why have you come back?"
6. "A man came to meet us," they replied.
   "And he said to us, 'Go back to the king who sent you and tell him,
   "This is what the LORD says:
   Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are sending men to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?
   Therefore you will not leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!"'"
7. The king asked them, "What kind of man was it who came to meet you and told you this?"
8. They replied, "He was a man with a garment of hair and with a leather belt around his waist."
   The king said, "That was Elijah the Tishbite."
9. Then he sent to Elijah a captain with his company of fifty men.
   The captain went up to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill, and said to him,
   "Man of God, the king says, 'Come down!'"
10. Elijah answered the captain,
   "If I am a man of God, may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!"
   Then fire fell from heaven and consumed the captain and his men.
11. At this the king sent to Elijah another captain with his fifty men.
   The captain said to him, "Man of God, this is what the king says, 'Come down at once!'"
12. "If I am a man of God," Elijah replied, "may fire come down from heaven and consume you and your fifty men!"
   Then the fire of God fell from heaven and consumed him and his fifty men.
13. So the king sent a third captain with his fifty men.
   This third captain went up and fell on his knees before Elijah.
   "Man of God," he begged, "please have respect for my life and the lives of these fifty men, your servants!
14. See, fire has fallen from heaven and consumed the first two captains and all their men.
   But now have respect for my life!"
15. The angel of the LORD said to Elijah, "Go down with him; do not be afraid of him."
   So Elijah got up and went down with him to the king.
16. He told the king, "This is what the LORD says:
   Is it because there is no God in Israel for you to consult that you have sent messengers to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?
   Because you have done this, you will never leave the bed you are lying on. You will certainly die!"
17. So he died, according to the word of the LORD that Elijah had spoken.
   Because Ahaziah had no son, Joram succeeded him as king in the second year of Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah.
18. As for all the other events of Ahaziah's reign,
   and what he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel?




아합의 아들 아하시야는
오므리 왕조의 마지막왕이었다.
그의 선조들의 부강한 나라를 물려받았으나
역시 선조들의 불신앙과
하나님을 떠나 우상을 섬기는 것 역시 물려받았다.
아버지 아합의 죽음을 보았고 알고 있었으며
엘리야를 통하여 어떻게 말씀하셨는지를 알고 있었음에도 불구하고
아하시야의 행동은 그리 선하지 않음을 본다.


어느날 다락에서 떨어져
다리를 다쳤음에 그는 그의 안위를 물으러
에글론에 있는 바알세붑에게 사자를 보낸다.
바알세붑은 누구이며 에글론은 어디인가?
바알세붑은 하나님의 가증히 여기시는 우상이며
에글론은 블레셋의 다섯도시중 하나가 아닌가?
자신들의 대적인 불레셋을 향해서
하나님의 나라 왕이 자신의 안위를 물으러 사자를 보내는 것이다.,
그것도 하나님이 가증히 여기시는 우상의 제단 앞에....


하나님은 그를 그대로 보시지 아니하시고
그를 죽이시기로 작정하신다.
하나님의 사자가 그를 향해 말씀하시고
엘리야는 그 사자들에게
하나님의 말씀을 전하고 있다.
아하시야는
자신의 죽음을 이야기한 사람이 엘리야임을 알아보고
엘리야를 불러들이라고 명령한다.
그러나 그의 명령은 그리 선하지 않음을 알 수 있다.
아마도 그 군대를 보내어 엘리야를 잡으러 보내었고
잡아서 자신을 향해 저주한 것에 책임을 물으려 했는지 모르겠다.

오십명의 군대를 이끌고 온 오십부장은
엘리야에게 내려올 것을 명한다.
그가 부르는 "하나님의 사람"이란 말은 존경이나 두려움이 아니라
어저면 조소의 의미로 사용되었는지 모르겠다.
하나님은 그들의 손에서 엘리야를 구원하신다.
하나님의 보내신 불은 그들을 사르고 그 오십부장의 죽이고 마는 것이다.
이 소식을 들을 아하시야는 경성하여야 함에도 불구하고
또 다른 오십부장을 보내고 있다.
이는 자신의 병을 인해 엘리야를 모시려 함이든지
아니면 죽이기 위해 엘리야를 데려 오려는 것이든지 간에
그리 선한 마음으로 엘리야를 향하고 있지 않음이 분명하다.

이 두번째 오십부장과 오십명의 군사도 역시 같은 죽임을 당한다.
이는 그의 말에 여전히 오만과 겸손이 없었음을 인함이다.
두번째 사람은 엘리야에게
"속히 내려"올 것을 명하고 있다.
첫 사람의 죽음도 그들을 변화시키지 못한 것이다.

그러나 세번째 사람은 달랐다.
그도 역시 악한 왕의 명령을 받았으나
그는 하나님의 사람 앞에 겸손함을 보인다.
그가 자신을 죽일 수 있음을 알고
그의 능력이 하나님으로부터 오는 것일 인정하는 사람이었던 것이다.
그를 보낸 아하시야가 여전히 자신의 교만을 인해
동일하게 오십부장을 보내었다해도
엘리야 앞에선 오십부장은 먼저 엘리야에게
자신과 오십인의 생명을 귀히 보시기를 구하고
하나님의 사람 엘리야에게 자신들의 연약함을 간구하고 잇는 것이다.

하나님은 그와함께 엘리야를 보내시고
당신의 뜻을 아하시야에게 알리신다.
하나님을 의지하지 않은 아하시야는 죽고 만다.


너무도 당연하고
너무도 분명한 사실들 앞에서
어덯게 이스라엘의 왕들은 실패할 수 있었을까?

하나님의 살아계심과
이스라엘의 역사가운데 섭리하심을 눈으로 목도하면서도
어덯게 하나님을 떠나 우상을 섬길 수 있었을까?
엘리야와 같은 위대한 선지자를 보면서
그의 입을 통해 말씀하시는 하나님의 음성을 들으면서도
여전히 자기의 뜻대로 하나님을 떠나 살수 있을까?....


이것이 우리의 모습일터이다.
