1. Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.
2. So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say,
   "May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely,
   if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them."
3. Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there,
4. while he himself went a day's journey into the desert.
   He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die.
   "I have had enough, LORD," he said. "Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors."
5. Then he lay down under the tree and fell asleep.
   All at once an angel touched him and said, "Get up and eat."
6. He looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals,
   and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.
7. The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said,
   "Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you."
8. So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food,
   he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.
9. There he went into a cave and spent the night.
   And the word of the LORD came to him: "What are you doing here, Elijah?"
10. He replied, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty.
   The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars,
   and put your prophets to death with the sword.
   I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too."
11. The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD,
   for the LORD is about to pass by."
   Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD,
   but the LORD was not in the wind.
   After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake.
12. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire.
   And after the fire came a gentle whisper.
13. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.
   Then a voice said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"
14. He replied, "I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty.
   The Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars,
   and put your prophets to death with the sword.
   I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too."
15. The LORD said to him, "Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus.
   When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram.
16. Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel,
   and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet.
17. Jehu will put to death any who escape the sword of Hazael,
   and Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu.
18. Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel
   --all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and all whose mouths have not kissed him."
19. So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat.
   He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair.
   Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him.
20. Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah.
   "Let me kiss my father and mother good-by," he said, "and then I will come with you."
   "Go back," Elijah replied. "What have I done to you?"
21. So Elisha left him and went back.
   He took his yoke of oxen and slaughtered them.
   He burned the plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate.
   Then he set out to follow Elijah and became his attendant.




큰 전쟁 이후에 찾아온 절망
엘리야는 하나님의 사람으로
열심이 특심하였다고 고백한다.
그는 느닷없이 하나님의 사자로 악한왕 아합과
그의 아내 이세벨을 향하여 단호하고 용감하게 하나님의 말씀을 전한다.
그리고 그 악이 관영한 세상에서 온전한 열심을 가지고 하나님의 말씀을 전하는 사자로 서기를 원한다.
아마도 그의 마음은 하나님에 대한 열심으로 충만했을 것이며
그의 눈은 미래에 당신의 말씀을 응하게 하실 하나님의 능력을 바라보았을 것이다.
더욱이 그는 하나님의 명령을 따라
바알과 아세라를 섬기는 선지자 85명과 더불어 싸웠고 승리하였다.
온 이스라엘과 아합왕이 보는 앞에서 하나님의 참 주권자되심을 증거하였다.
갈멜산 산상에서 불로 임재하시는 하나님의 영광을 보았으며
칼로 우상을 섬기는 선지자들을 다 몰수히 죽이기까지 하지 않았는가?


그리고 간절히 기도함으로
하나님의 징계로 주신 가뭄이 3년여 만에 그치고
큰비가 내리는 이적을 경험케 하지 않았는가?
그런데 세상은 그럼에도 불구하고 변하지 않았다.
하나님의 능력과 하나님의 살아계심을 보았고
하나님이 내리시는 징계를 보았음에도 불구하고
이세벨은 더 심한 악을 품고
엘리야의 목숨을 노리고 있는 것이다.


엘리야는 자신의 목숨 때문이 아니라
절망을 인해서 죽기를 간구한다.

"하나님!
저들이 아무런 변화가 없습니다.
하나님의 살아계심을 목도하고도 저들의 마음에 있는 완악함은 변하질 않습니다.
제가 어떻게 한다 해도 저들을 회개시키고
저들로 하나님의 백성의 자리로 돌이키게 할 자신이 없습니다."

이것이 그의 솔직한 심정이 아니었을까?
우리는 연약한 인간이어서
지치지 않고 하나님의 일을 감당할 수 없다.
우리의 열심을 다하여 하나님의 일을 감당할 대가 있는가 하면
쉽게 지치고 절망하는 존재이기도 한 것이다.


내가 하나님의 맞기신 일들을 열심을 다해서 하고 나면
우리는 그 일에 대한 가시적인 성과를 보기를 원한다.
그것은 결코 나의 공명심을 인함은 아니다.
단지 이만큼하면 이정도는 변하리라는 기대인 것이다.
그러나 또 너무도 자주 우리는 그러한 기대가 무너지는 것을 경험한다.
복음을 전하고 가르침에도 불구하고
놀라운 은혜를 체험하고 그의 인생이 변할 듯한 경험에도 불구하고
곧 본연의 자리로 돌아가고 마는 사람들을 보면서
또 나의 그러한 연약을 바라보면서
이내 좌절을 경험하고 마는 것이다.


이만하면 족하다.
더해봐야 큰 변화가 없을 것이라는 생각에 빠지는 것이다.
그래서 다시 일어서서 달려가기가 쉽지 않고
지치지 않고 용기를 내어 살아가는 것이 힘든 것은 아닐까?


하나님은 그러나 그런 엘리야를 일으켜 세우시기를 원하신다.
먹을 것과 마실것을 공급하시고
당신의 손으로 회복시키셔서
그가 해야할 마지막 사역을 맡기시는 것이다.

하나님은 엘리야를 시내산에서 만나신다.
아니 호렙산이라 불리워진 하나님의 산에서 만나신다.
온 산 전체가 돌로 이루어진 산
바위와 적막만이 가득한 사막 한 가운데 세워지 산
그곳에서 하나님은 엘리야를 만나신다.
큰 폭풍과 지진 불과 위엄가운데서가 아니라
조용하고 세미한 음성 가운데서
엘리야를 만나신다.


우리는 하나님의 말씀과 역사가
큰 능력을 통해 증거되어지기를 원하고
그로 인해 사람들의 심령이 그들의 삶이 일순간 바뀌어 지기를 원하지만
하나님은 당신의 세미한 음성을 통해 역사를 이루시는 것을 보여주시는 것이리라.


그리고 그를 통하여
당신의 후계자 엘리사를 세우게 하신다.
여전히 하나님의 일은 이루어지고
그 말씀은 증거되어 진다.....
