블레셋과의 전쟁과 요나단으로 인한 구원.....


하나님의 말씀을 순종하지 못한 사울과 연약한 이스라엘
그리고 막강한 화력과 군대를 가진 블레셋과의 전쟁에서
하나님은 당신을 신뢰하고 의지하는 한사람 요나단을 보시고 전쟁을
승리할 수 있도록 허락하신다. 단 한사람을 인해서.....



1. One day Jonathan son of Saul said to the young man
   bearing his armor, "Come, let's go over to the Philistine outpost
   on the other side." But he did not tell his father.
2. Saul was staying on the outskirts of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree
   in Migron. With him were about six hundred men,
3. among whom was Ahijah, who was wearing an ephod.
   He was a son of Ichabod's brother Ahitub son of Phinehas,
   the son of Eli, the LORD'S priest in Shiloh.
   No one was aware that Jonathan had left.


요나단은 아버지 사울에게 말하지 않고 적진에 들어가보려고 한다.
아직은그가 무슨 이유로 이러한 생각을 하였는지 알수 없다.
다만 그의 행동을 성경이 주목해서 기록하고 있을 따름이고
그의 병기를 든 소년이 함께 요나단과 동행하였음을 보여준다.
어쩌면 이 병기든소년의 충성만큼만의 충성을 하나님은 사울에게 요구하셨는지 모른다.


사울은 사무엘이 떠나고 난 후에 에봇을 입은 아히야와 함께 한다.
에봇을 입었다는 것은 제사장으로 하나님의 뜻을 구하는 존재로 함꼐 하고 있는 것인데
이 아히야는 기록된대로 비느하스의 손자이며 이가봇의 형제인 아히둡의 아들이다.
하나님의 보시기에 악한 자들이었던 비느하스의 손자를 사울은 자기의
제사장으로 의지하여 함께 하고 있는 것이다.
물론 할아버지의 삶에 대해서만 기록이 있으므로 이 아히야의 삶이
어떠했는지는 알길이 없지만 하나님이 심판하신 계보의 아들이
사무엘의 자리를 대신하고 있는 것은 충분히 의도적인 기록일 것이다.


또 다른 측면에서는 하나님께서 사무엘을 엘리 대신에
하나님의 선지자로 사사로 세우셨지만 여전히 대제사장의 직임은
엘리의 가문으로 승계되고 있음을 보여주는 것이리라.
이 아히야는 후에 다윗의 제사장이 되는 아비아달의 아버지인 아히멜렉과 동일인물이다.


4. On each side of the pass that Jonathan intended to cross to reach
   the Philistine outpost was a cliff; one was called Bozez,
   and the other Seneh.
5. One cliff stood to the north toward Micmash,
   the other to the south toward Geba.
6. Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer,
   "Come, let's go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised fellows.
   Perhaps the LORD will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder
   the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few."
7. "Do all that you have in mind," his armor-bearer said.
   "Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul."


요나단과 그의 병기를 든 소년이 블레셋진영에 올라간다.
그들이 그곳에서 서로에게 하고 있는 말을 통해 우리는 그들의 마음을 읽어볼 수 있다.


요나단은 블레셋을 "할례없는 자"로 칭하면서 하나님의 언약안에 있는 백성으로서의
자존감을 분명히 밝히고 있다. 적어도 요나단만은 하나님의 언약을 알고
그 언약을 굳게 붙잡고 있음을 보여주는 단적인 표현인 것이다.
그리고 그의 신앙의 고백인 "하나님의 구원은 사람숫자에 있지 않다"고 하는 것을 보면서
하나님을 신뢰하는 사람의 전형적인 고백을 확인할 수 있다.
뿐만아니라 요나단의 병기를 든 소년의 고백 역시 하나님을 신뢰하는 이의 고백임을 본다.
"내가 마음과 영으로 당신과 함께 하겠다"


하나님은 사울에게 그 마음과 뜻을 다해서 하나님을 따르기를 바라셨다.
아무리 어려운 환경에 처했다 할지라도 하나님의 말씀을 신뢰함으로
그 하나님을 바라고 다르는 것이 그의 해야할 본분이었다.
사울은 그 신뢰와 신실함을 버렸지만
요나단과 그 병기든 소년은 하나님의 언약을 신뢰하고 따르고 있는 것이다.


적극적으로 이 둘을 비교함으로
하나님의 백성으로 살아가는 것이 어떠한 것인가를 보여준다.

나는 어느편에 서 있는가?
사울과 같이 인간의 눈으로 사는지 아니면 요나단과 같이 하나님의 눈으로 사는지....


8. Jonathan said, "Come, then;
   we will cross over toward the men and let them see us.
9. If they say to us, 'Wait there until we come to you,'
   we will stay where we are and not go up to them.
10. But if they say, 'Come up to us,' we will climb up, because that
   will be our sign that the LORD has given them into our hands."
11. So both of them showed themselves to the Philistine outpost.
   "Look!" said the Philistines.
   "The Hebrews are crawling out of the holes they were hiding in."
12. The men of the outpost shouted to Jonathan
   and his armor-bearer, "Come up to us and we'll teach you a lesson."
   So Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, "Climb up after me;
   the LORD has given them into the hand of Israel."
13. Jonathan climbed up, using his hands and feet,
   with his armor-bearer right behind him.
   The Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer followed
   and killed behind him.
14. In that first attack Jonathan and his armor-bearer killed
   some twenty men in an area of about half an acre.


요나단과 그의 소년은 블레셋의 진영에 얼굴을 보이고
그들이 보이는 반응에 따라 그 진영으로 올라간다.
단 두명의 용사가 절벽을 기어 올라가서 블레셋의 진영으로 들어가는데
그 진영에 있던 블레셋 군대가 대항하지 못하고 죽임을 당했다.
상식적으로 밑에서 기어올라오는 적을 상대하는 것이야 말로
너무도 쉬운일이 아니었을까?
그럼에도 불구하고 그들을 겁을 먹었던 것 같고
1/2에이커 되는 지역에 있던 20여명의 군사가 죽임을 당했다.


요나단에게는 확신이 있었고
그 확신은 놀라운 용맹함으로 표현되어졌다.
헐헐단신으로 적진에 들어가는 것도 그러하려니와
그 싸움의 정황에 관계하지 않고 적극적으로 충돌하는 모습을 통해서
하나님을 신뢰하는 사람의 무모하고도 놀라운 용기를 보게된다.
하나님은 그의 신뢰를 져버리지 않으셨고 그로하여금 승리하게 하셨다.


이것이 그리스도인의 모습이며 하나님의 모습이다.
하나님을 신뢰함으로 이 세상의 어떠한 것에도 두려움을 느끼지 아니하고
담대하게 나아가 부딫혀 싸울수 있는 사람들
세상이 볼때 너무도 무모해서 도무지 이해할 수 없는 사람들
그러나 그 결국을 하나님게 맡김으로 승리하는 사람들이 바로 그리스도인이다.


하나님은 우리에게 그런 용사가 되기를원하신다.
싸움의 승패는 전략적이거나 상황에 있지 아니하고
하나님의 말씀을 전적으로 신뢰하는가에 달려있다는 것을 아는 용사
나의 이익과 평안을 위해서가 아니라 하나님의 영광을 위해서
하나님의 말슴에 순종하여서 이 세상을 살아가는 그런 용사를 말이다.
하나님께서 나에게 그러한 사람이 될 수 있는 은혜를 주시기를.......


15. Then panic struck the whole army--those in the camp and field,
   and those in the outposts and raiding parties--and the ground shook.
   It was a panic sent by God.
16. Saul's lookouts at Gibeah in Benjamin saw the army
   melting away in all directions.
17. Then Saul said to the men who were with him,
   "Muster the forces and see who has left us."
   When they did, it was Jonathan and his armor-bearer
   who were not there.
18. Saul said to Ahijah, "Bring the ark of God."
   (At that time it was with the Israelites.)
19. While Saul was talking to the priest, the tumult in the Philistine
   camp increased more and more. So Saul said to the priest,
   "Withdraw your hand."
20. Then Saul and all his men assembled and went to the battle.
   They found the Philistines in total confusion, striking each other
   with their swords.
21. Those Hebrews who had previously been with the Philistines
   and had gone up with them to their camp went over
   to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.
22. When all the Israelites who had hidden in the hill country
   of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were on the run,
   they joined the battle in hot pursuit.
23. So the LORD rescued Israel that day,
   and the battle moved on beyond Beth Aven.


요나단으로 인하여 시작된 혼란은
하나님의 보내신 떨림이었고 혼동이었다.
이로인하여 블레셋군은 공포가운데서 서로를 죽이기 시작했고
전쟁은 급격하게 이스라엘의 승리로 기울어가고 있었다.

사울은 반대편에서 이일을 바라보다가
요나단으로 인하여 이 일이 일어난 것을 듣고
전쟁에 참여하여 도망가는 블레셋을 추격하여 진멸한다.
그러나 사울은 이 일을보면서 제사장 아히야에게
하나님의 언약궤를 가지고 오게하는 명령을 내리고 또 거두는 사건을 통하여
여전히 그의 생각과 신앙은 이전 비느하스때의 이스라엘과 다르지 않음을 보여준다.
하나님을 신뢰함으로 전쟁에 나서는 것이 아니라
자기의 전쟁을 승리하기 위하여 하나님의 궤를 이용하려는 자세
그에게 하나님의 궤는 전쟁의 승리를 담보하는 것일 뿐이다.
이미 사울의 마음은 하나님의 눈에서 멀어지고
그의 통치는 하나님을 신뢰함에서 멀어져 가고 있는 것을 보여준다.


반면 요나단의 믿음은
하나님의 임재를 불러왔고 하나님의 구원을 얻었다.
하나님께서는 요나단의 고백을 통하여 이스라엘을 구원하시고
블레셋을 멸하시기로 작정하신 것이다.


24. Now the men of Israel were in distress that day,
   because Saul had bound the people under an oath, saying,
   "Cursed be any man who eats food before evening comes,
   before I have avenged myself on my enemies!"
   So none of the troops tasted food.


사울의 헛된맹세


사울은 이 전쟁의 승리를 허락하신 하나님을 바라보지 못한다.
요나단으로 인하여 하나님이 승리를 허락하셨음에도 불구하고
사울은 이 전쟁을 자신의 복수하는 것으로 만들어 버리고 만다.
물론 그의 원수갚음이 국가적인 측면의 원수 갚음이겠으나
그는 이 일을 이루신 하나님보다 자신의 통치권을 더욱 중요시하고 있는 것이다.
맹세의 내용이 어떠했는가보다 그가 이 맹세를 하게하는 마음이
하나님 보시기에 아름답지 못하다는 것이다.


완전히 실패와 패배의 길에선 그들에게
하나님께서 구원을 허락하셨는데 사울은 이 일을 인하여 하나님을 생각지 않고
오히려 자기의 마음에 있는 분을 먼저 생각하고 있는 것이다.
그리고 왕으로서 백성들의 마음과 상황을 살피지 못한것도 역시
그의 실패중 큰 실패일 것이다.
자신은 어떠할지 몰라도 전쟁중에 식량이 없어 고통하는 이들에게
먹을 것을 허락하지 않는것이야 말로 어리석음일지 모르겠다.


25. The entire army entered the woods,
   and there was honey on the ground.
26. When they went into the woods, they saw the honey oozing out,
   yet no one put his hand to his mouth, because they feared the oath.
27. But Jonathan had not heard that his father had bound the people
   with the oath, so he reached out the end of the staff that was
   in his hand and dipped it into the honeycomb.
   He raised his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened.
28. Then one of the soldiers told him,
   "Your father bound the army under a strict oath, saying,
   'Cursed be any man who eats food today!'
   That is why the men are faint."
29. Jonathan said, "My father has made trouble for the country.
   See how my eyes brightened when I tasted a little of this honey.
30. How much better it would have been if the men had eaten today
   some of the plunder they took from their enemies.
   Would not the slaughter of the Philistines have been even greater?"
31. That day, after the Israelites had struck down the Philistines
   from Micmash to Aijalon, they were exhausted.
32. They pounced on the plunder and, taking sheep, cattle and calves,
   they butchered them on the ground and ate them,
   together with the blood.
33. Then someone said to Saul,
   "Look, the men are sinning against the LORD by eating meat
   that has blood in it." "You have broken faith," he said.
   "Roll a large stone over here at once."
34. Then he said, "Go out among the men and tell them,
   'Each of you bring me your cattle and sheep, and slaughter them
   here and eat them. Do not sin against the LORD by eating meat
   with blood still in it.'" So everyone brought his ox that night
   and slaughtered it there.


사울의 맹세를 알지 못하는 요나단의 행동과
그로인하여 요나단이 지적하는 아버지 사울의 잘못을 보면서
적어도 사울보다는 요나단이 하나님 보시기에 지혜롭고 온전한 인물임을 본다.
하나님은 왜 요나단을 사울의 아들로 허락하셨을까?
적어도 그가 이스라엘의 왕이었다면 더 하나님 보시기에 온전한
왕의 직임을 감당할 수 있지 않았을까?
그럼에도 불구하고 하나님은 사울의 실패로인하여 요나단을 왕으로 삼지 않으시고
다윗을 왕으로 삼으시고 만것을 본다.


하나님의 사람 요나단은 그럼에도불구하고
그가 왕위에 오르기 위함이 아니라 하나님의 말씀에 순종하기 위하여
또 그 하나님의 사람으로 온전히 서기위하여 자신의 삶을 살아가는 전형을
우리에게 보여줌으로 하나님의 사람의 또 다른 모델을 제시하고 있는지 모른다.
그가 하나님을 온전히 신뢰함으로 비록 왕위에 오르지 못하였을지라도
하나님의 보시기에 온전한 사람이었을터이니 말이다.
그가 비록 전장에서 사울과 함께 죽었을 지라도
하나님은 그를 높이시고 사랑하실 것이다.
이 세상의 실패와 같은 삶을 사는 이들중에 여전히 하나님의 말씀을 따르며
하나님의 신실한 사람으로 살아가는 사람이 있을수 있음을 우리는 이로써 알게된다.


35. Then Saul built an altar to the LORD;
   it was the first time he had done this.
36. Saul said, "Let us go down after the Philistines by night
   and plunder them till dawn, and let us not leave one of them alive."
   "Do whatever seems best to you," they replied.
   But the priest said, "Let us inquire of God here."
37. So Saul asked God,
   "Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you give them
   into Israel's hand?" But God did not answer him that day.
38. Saul therefore said, "Come here, all you who are leaders
   of the army, and let us find out what sin has been committed today.
39. As surely as the LORD who rescues Israel lives,
   even if it lies with my son Jonathan, he must die."
   But not one of the men said a word.
40. Saul then said to all the Israelites,
   "You stand over there; I and Jonathan my son will stand over here."
   "Do what seems best to you," the men replied.
41. Then Saul prayed to the LORD, the God of Israel,
   "Give me the right answer." And Jonathan and Saul were taken
   by lot, and the men were cleared.
42. Saul said, "Cast the lot between me and Jonathan my son."
   And Jonathan was taken.
43. Then Saul said to Jonathan, "Tell me what you have done."
   So Jonathan told him, "I merely tasted a little honey with
   the end of my staff. And now must I die?"
44. Saul said, "May God deal with me, be it ever so severely,
   if you do not die, Jonathan."
45. But the men said to Saul,
   "Should Jonathan die--he who has brought about this great
   deliverance in Israel? Never! As surely as the LORD lives,
   not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, for he did this today
   with God's help." So the men rescued Jonathan,
   and he was not put to death.


사울은 블레셋과의 전쟁후 첫 제단을 쌓는다.
아마도 하나님의 임재와 승전에 대한 기념이었으리라.
그리고 이후의 전쟁을 위하여 하나님꼐 묻는과정을 통해
하나님의 무응답을 인하여 잘못이 있음을 알고 하나님께 다시 묻는다.


그리하여 제비뽑기를 하여 요나단을 뽑아 그가 꿀을 먹었음을 알게된다.
사울은 그의 아들이라할지라도 자신의 맹세를 어겼으므로
죽여야 한다고 공포하였으나 사람들의 만류로 결국 그만두는 것을 본다.


사울의 맹세는 하나님 앞에서의 맹세였다.
하나님은 그 맹세가 온전치 못함을 아셨으므로
이 맹세를 어긴 요나단을 구원하셨고 그로인하여 전쟁을 승리케 하셨다.
비록 사울의 행위가 온당해 보인다 할지라도
그의 맹세와 이후의 행위가 하나님의 말씀을 순종하려는 것이라기 보다
자신의 통치를 확립하기 위함이라고 보이기에 하나님은
사울의 손을 들어주시지 않은 것이리라.



46. Then Saul stopped pursuing the Philistines,
   and they withdrew to their own land.
47. After Saul had assumed rule over Israel, he fought against
   their enemies on every side: Moab, the Ammonites, Edom,
   the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines.
   Wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment on them.
48. He fought valiantly and defeated the Amalekites,
   delivering Israel from the hands of those who had plundered them.
49. Saul's sons were Jonathan, Ishvi and Malki-Shua.
   The name of his older daughter was Merab,
   and that of the younger was Michal.
50. His wife's name was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz.
   The name of the commander of Saul's army was Abner son of Ner,
   and Ner was Saul's uncle.
51. Saul's father Kish and Abner's father Ner were sons of Abiel.
52. All the days of Saul there was bitter war with the Philistines,
   and whenever Saul saw a mighty or brave man,
   he took him into his service.


이후에 사울은 계속된 전쟁에서 승리를 거둔다.
하나님은 이후에 이스라엘을 이방의 손에서 구원하시고
그 구원을 이루시는 일에 사울을 사용하시기를 주저하지 않으셨다.


그렇다면 아직 하나님은 사울에게 기회를 주고 계신지도 모른다.
그가 여전히 하나님을 신뢰하고 그 말씀에 순종하는 왕으로 돌아온다면
그가 하나님의 나라 이스라엘의 왕의 자리에 걸맞는 순종을 한다면
하나님은 그의 왕위와 통치를 인정하셨을지 모른다.
그렇다면 그의 아들 요나단으로 이스라엘의 왕을 삼으며
하나님을 신뢰하는 왕의 전형을 보여줄 수 있었을지도 모른다.


그러나 분명한 것은 사울은 그러한 기회를 잃었다는 것이다.
하나님의 분명한 음성에도 불구하고 그는 하나님의 왕으로서
이스라엘을 다스리는 일에 실패하고 마는 것이다.



우리의 삶은 하나님의 보시기에 어더한가?
늘 승리하고 순종하지는 못한다 할지라도
그 실패의 순간에 돌이켜서 하나님의 음성을 따르는 사람으로 서고 있는가?
하나님이 기버하시는 삶을 살기위해 나의 죄를 회개하고
나의 삶을 점검하며 돌이키는 용기를 가지고 있는가 말이다.


지금이라도 돌이키면
하나님은 우리를 당신의 사람으로 다시 쓰실 것이다....
